    PROJECTS AND RESEARCH:

  • Price behavior of SSE 30 Index     April 2000

  • Chinese security market is growing rapidly and is gaining more attention. This study is designed to examine the price behavior of the SSE 30 Index in Shanghai stock market. My findings indicate that: (i) Tuesday effect exist for SSE 30 Index; (ii) Hardly any difference in price volatility can be found between Tuesdays and other weekdays; (iii) The hypothesis that SSE 30 Index follows random walk can't be rejected using variance-ratio test; and (iv) Trading noise is larger when market is in downward trend than in the upward trend.

  • Export-led Growth and China Economy     June, 1999

  • Attracted by the problem of causality relationship between the growth of output and export in China case, I performed Granger Causality tests between export growth and output growth for China. Using OLS, FGLS and Functional Form, the results failed to support the export promotion hypothesis, but causality could run in the growth-led export direction.

  • An equation about Financial Crisis     April, 1999

  • I redid one equation in Jeffrey Sachs's paper "Financial Crises in Emerging Markets: The Lessons from 1995", Brookings Papers on Economic Activity 1:1996. Using their benchmark data, I diagnosed data's Multicollinearity, Heteroscedasticity and Autocorrelation problems, compared OLS, White's OLS and GLS regression results, and checked model's overall stability. The result I obtained is the same as the result in the article. A newly specified quadratic model is also conducted and compared with the original specification. The new model can help us make same conclusions. But by checking overall stability, J and reversed J test, the original specification seems to be better.

  • WTO and China Telecommunication Industry     April, 1999

  • In this paper, we analyze the domestic and international backgrounds for China's entry into the WTO, and the opportunity and challenge for China telecom industry. we conclude that although liberalization of telecom has been agreed in order to attain the ultimate goal of accession to the WTO, the fundamental condition – that China must simultaneously deal with dual issues -- has not changed, and this will be the key factor in understanding future developments. Overall, WTO entry has more advantages than disadvantages. This corroborates the necessity of China's entry into the WTO.

  • Some tests on Singapore Non-oil Export Index     March, 1998

  • ARIMA model is used to forecast Singapore's domestic export. An Error Correction Model is formed using U.S. electronics order from Singapore, Weighted Industrial Product Index of major advanced countries and Singapore's export. Comparison of the forecast results from two models are conducted using MSE method.

  • Chapter 5 -- "China's foreign exchange market" , Book "Financial investment in China", Oct., 1997, Shanghai People Press.

  • Obstacles, procedures and possible results of liberalizing interest rates in China     January, 1997

  • Selected to be presented in the Conference of "Reform and development of China's Commercial Banks" in January, 1997
Published on Journal of Shanghai Finance in February 1997

China's interest rates subjected to little fluctuation. Government lack short-term interest rates to monitor the foreign exchange market. This led to interest rate disparity in domestic and international financial markets, which constitutes relatively stable risk premium and triggers off continuous inflow of arbitrage capital. Negative and even disastrous effects can be caused on domestic economy by the inflow and outflow of arbitrage capital. Liberalization of China's interest rates is essential in its financial system reform. Current obstacles, procedures as well as experience from other countries are introduced in the thesis.
